The French parliament has passed legislation toughening France’s immigration policy after months of political wrangling. The bill, which gave French President Emmanuel Macron a policy victory, also exposed cracks in his centrist majority. The amended bill was backed by both President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Renaissance party and Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN)So wide was the majority in the lower house that the ruling party did not need Pen’s support for the bill. Initially, the bill planned to make it easier for migrants working in sectors that lack labour to get a residency permit and to expel illegal migrants. Pressure from the right saw the government agree to water down regulations on residency permits while delaying migrants’ access to welfare benefits.
