Mia Schem, a French-Israeli former hostage who was held in Hamas captivity for 54 days, told Israel Channel 13 about her Gaza ordeal, saying she “went through a Holocaust”.Schem, who was released on November 30, told the Israeli broadcaster she was held at a family house in Gaza after she was kidnapped from the Nova festival near Reim during the October 7 Hamas attack.”It’s families under Hamas (control). You know, in retrospect, I suddenly realised that I was with a family. Suddenly I started asking myself questions, why am I at a family’s house? Why are there children here? Why is there a woman here?” she said.In the interview, Schem said was scared of being raped or killed. She said food was sometimes restricted.”(I was) closed in a dark room, not allowed to talk, not allowed to be seen, to be heard, hidden. A terrorist is looking at you 24/7, looking, raping you with his eyes.” She said. “There is a fear of being raped, there is a fear of dying… I was frightened.”The full interview will be aired on Channel 13 News on Friday (December 29) at 1800GMT.Schem had returned to Israel in a late November swap deal, seven weeks into the Israel-Hamas war.The 21-year-old was seized at the Nova dance party along with many of the other hostages abducted into Gaza.”I didn’t sleep for the entire 54 days, maybe an hour, at night. How can you sleep when a terrorist is looking at you?” she said.Since Hamas killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages on Oct. 7 in the deadliest day in Israel’s 75-year history, Israel’s armed forces have responded with an offensive that has laid much of Hamas-ruled Gaza to waste. As well as the reported 21,000 Palestinian dead, thousands more are feared to be buried under rubble. Nearly all the enclave’s 2.3 million people have been driven from their homes.
