Israel and South Africa are set for a showdown at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the war in Gaza. South Africa sought an urgent ICJ order declaring Israel in violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention for its actions in Gaza. South Africa has for decades backed the Palestinian cause for statehood in Israeli-occupied territories. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has compared Israel’s policies regarding Palestinians with apartheid, a parallel vehemently rejected by Israel.
