North Korean Shelling Prompts South Korea Evacuation And Military Drills, China Urges Restraint

North Korea fired more than 200 artillery rounds into the sea near a tense maritime border with South Korea on Jan. 5. The move triggered an evacuation of residents of two South Korean islands. The residents were told to take shelter due to an unspecified “situation”, Reuters reported. The firing by North Korea caused no civilian or military damage in the South, South Korea’s military said in a news briefing. South Korean Marine brigades based on the Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong islands fired at sea to the south of the NLL border.
