Scientists have made a breakthrough in electronics, creating the world’s first functional semiconductor made from graphene. The discovery is seen as a possible “leap forward” for superfast computing beyond silicon chips. It comes at a time when silicon, the material using which nearly all modern electronics are made, is reaching its limit. Semiconductors are materials that conduct electricity under specific conditions and are foundational components of electronics. This long-elusive feat was possible due to the efforts of scientists at China’s Tianjin University and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
