US President Joe Biden’s administration is homing in on a new doctrine on the Middle East, said Thomas Friedman of the New York Times. The doctrine involves an unprecedented push to advance the creation of a demilitarised but viable Palestinian state. The plan, Friedman writes, “would involve some form of US recognition of a demilitarised Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The new “Biden Doctrine” would also include boosting ties with Saudi Arabia, alongside a normalisation of ties between Riyadh and Tel Aviv. The new policy would also include maintaining a tough military stance against Iran and its proxies.
