Pakistan Votes Amid Curbs On Internet, Imran Khan’s Party | Nawaz Sharif Woos Army, Calls Polls Fair

Pakistani authorities suspended mobile calls and data services as millions headed to the polls to vote in a new government. The caretaker government said phone services, including mobile internet, had been suspended for security reasons. Pakistan’s interior ministry said as a result of the “deteriorating security situation” it needed to “take measures to safeguard against threats,”Both calls and data services have been suspended, though wifi networks still appear to be working.More than 128 million people are registered to vote in the election, the largest in the country’s history. Over 5,000 candidates are contesting the 266 directly-elected seats in the 336-member National Assembly. The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) and the PPP are considered the two major parties going into the vote. Imran Khan’s PTI-backed candidates are running as independents after jailed ex-PM Imran Khan’s party was banned from using the cricket bat symbol.
