In a remarkable display of diplomatic prowess, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has strengthened ties with Gulf countries, particularly the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar and Saudi Arabia. A significant milestone was the inauguration of a grand Hindu temple in the UAE, a testament to the close relationship between Modi and UAE’s leadership, notably President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed al Nahyan. The $84 million temple complex, built on 27 acres of land donated by the Emirati President, signifies the deepening bonds between the two nations. The UAE’s supportive stance towards India extends beyond the temple inauguration, with the nation being a key ally. The UAE’s progressive turn under its crown prince, coupled with shared strategic interests and economic collaborations, has solidified the friendship. Trade between India and the UAE has reached $84 billion annually, making the UAE India’s third-largest trade partner. The UAE’s acceptance of Indian payment systems and recognition of India’s potential further cements their strong bilateral relationship. In a contrasting scenario, the diplomatic landscape in Qatar presented a challenge for India when eight retired Indian naval officers faced a devastating execution sentence on charges of espionage. Modi’s deft diplomatic handling, coupled with a personal intervention, led to the commutation of the death sentence to a life sentence and eventual release. This success was followed by a visit to Qatar, where a favorable LNG deal worth $78 billion was signed, showcasing India’s growing geopolitical relevance.Saudi Arabia also featured prominently in India’s diplomatic achievements, with the conclusion of the military exercise ‘Sada Tanseeq.’ This exercise reflects the strengthening strategic ties between Riyadh and New Delhi. While not as progressive as the UAE, Saudi Arabia’s approach towards India aligns with shared interests, as both nations are members of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
