Senators upheld an informal agreement, ensuring the delivery of fighter jets to Turkey in exchange for cessation of opposition to Sweden’s NATO accession. “A deal’s a deal,” said Idaho Sen. Jim Risch, the ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “Call it quid pro quo. That sounds better than extortion” Republican Sen. Rand Paul, who introduced the resolution to try to block the sale, told fellow senators. Before the vote, Paul criticised Turkey’s government and said allowing the sale would embolden its “misbehaviour.”
