The image of Aleksei Navalny’s body in a coffin, at a church in southern Moscow, conveys many of the traditions of the Russian Orthodox Church. In a paradox of sorts, this is the same institution that has bound itself closely to the Kremlin and to President Vladimir Putin but also boasts one of its famous dissidents as a member. Over the years, the church has tied itself closely to the increasingly conservative and nationalist President Vladimir Putin.
