US President Joe Biden on April 11 pledged to defend the Philippines from any attack in the South China Sea. Biden vowed to defend the Southeast Asian country he hosted the first joint summit with the Philippine President and the Japanese Prime Minister. The US, Japanese and Philippine leaders hailed the meeting as “historic” as they met amid growing tensions with Beijing. During the summit, Biden also laid out the ground rules that will trigger the mutual defence treaty. Meanwhile, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said the “summit is an opportunity to define the future that the Philippines wants.” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishda said that “multi-layered cooperation is essential” and “today’s meeting will make history.” Watch the video to find out more
