Five Eurofighter Typhoon jets from the German Air Force conducted air policing exercises near Lielvarde Air Base in Latvia on April 17, as part of NATO’s rotating Baltic air policing mission. The German detachment will remain in Latvia for the mission until November.Lielvarde is the third base in the Baltics from which the alliance’s aircraft monitor the skies over Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.Lieutenant Colonel Swen Jacob, Commander of the NATO-led Baltic Air Policing mission, said NATO fighter jets are often scrambled from the base to escort Russian aircraft flying near Baltic airspace or using international airspace with transponders turned off.On the southern end of the alliance’s eastern flank, the Romanian navy conducted a military drill in the Black Sea near the port of Constanta on April 16.
