Throngs of protesters blocked an entrance to Google’s annual I/O conference for several hours.The protesting faction says that Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion contract awarded to Google and Amazon.com in 2021 to supply the Israeli government with cloud services, supports the development of military tools by the Israeli government.”The contract that Google and Amazon have with the Israeli government, Project Nimbus, means that technology like artificial intelligence and cloud computing are being used for direct harm,” said Roni Geiger, an ex-Google Health employee. “That’s really painful to me and I don’t think it needs to be that way.”Signs denouncing Project Nimbus were seen buoying throughout the crowd while protesters chanted.”We understand, however, that in the midst of not only the ongoing occupation of Palestine by Israel, but the unfolding genocide that Israel is committing against Palestinians in Gaza, that these technologies are going to be used principally in executing military operations against Palestinians,” said Wassim Hage, organizer with Arab Resource and Organizing Center. “These technologies are going to be used to facilitate the mass murder and the indiscriminate killing of Palestinians.”After a few hours the blockade of the conference’s entrance ended and the protesters dispersed
