China Slams “Smear” As Taiwan’s Lai Attacks “Autocracy” On Tiananmen Anniversary, Hong Kong On Alert

On the 35th anniversary of the violent June 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown in China, Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee warned of possible “attempts” to “cause trouble” in the region. The leader refrained from naming anyone when he issued the warning as the anniversary becomes increasingly sensitive in Hong Kong which is now a special administrative region of Beijing. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s new pro-independence President, Lai Ching-te, who has already rubbed Beijing the wrong way, said that he will work hard to make the historical memory of the anniversary last forever. In an implicit attack on Taiwan, Chinese foreign ministry has accused foreign governments of “hyping up” the issue to “smear” Beijing.Watch for more details.
