Voters across Europe cast their ballots on June 9, the final day of voting, in an election for the European Parliament. In a shift from issues such as the cost of living, farm policies, climate change, and so on, that have traditionally dominated the electoral discourse in the 27 member states of the bloc, the polls this year saw the Israel-Hamas war and the larger Palestine issue take centre stage. The war has divided the more than 300 million voters between the right and the left amid polarised politics and increased nationalism. While politicians from left-wing parties have been vocal about Palestine in election campaigns, EU lawmakers from right-leaning political groups including the union’s chief Ursula von der Leyen have taken either a cautious stance or refrained from commenting on the conflict between Israel and Palestine.Watch for more details.
