The Philippines did not consider invoking a mutual defence treaty with the US over a recent confrontation involving Chinese coast guard personnel. Manila had accused China of disrupting a resupply mission in the disputed South China Sea on June 17.A Philippine sailor suffered serious injury after what its military described as “intentional-high speed ramming” by the Chinese Coast Guard. The incident, as per Manila, was aimed to disrupt a resupply mission for troops stationed on the Second Thomas Shoal.The Philippine military chief had accused Chinese soldiers of acting like “pirates” during the confrontation.
